Your home

Just as with the other types of waste (PMD, paper-cardboard, glass, etc.), the way your food waste will be collected in the orange bag will depend on your building:

  • Do you live in a detached house? Or in an apartment in a building that does not have its own large collective containers in a waste bins room? Bruxelles-Propreté will collect your orange bag ‘door-to-door’, just as it does for your other waste bags: place them outside on the pavement at the right time.
  • Do you live in an apartment block that has a waste bins room with large collective containers? A large orange container, of 240 litres, will be placed in this room: put your orange bags in it at any time. If you have any questions, please ask your concierge or your property manager.

Door-to-door collection for households

If you live in in a detached house or in an apartment in a building that does not have its own large containers in a waste bins room, your waste is collected ‘door-to-door’ by Bruxelles-Propreté. This means that you put out your white, yellow, and blue bags, etc. on the pavement on collection day.

If so, your orange bag will also be collected once a week by Bruxelles-Propreté.

Please note that your food waste must not be thrown straight into the orange container, but placed first in the orange bag. Your orange bag, with or without its orange container, should be placed on the pavement in front of your building on collection day.

To find out the collection day and time in your neighbourhood, please consult the collection calendar at www.bruxelles-proprete.be.

Collection from buildings with large containers

If you live in an apartment block that has its own large containers for sorting of household waste, you are used to putting out white, yellow, and blue bags in these containers, which are often located in a ‘bins’ room in the basement.

You should do the same with the orange bags! A new large container, of 240 litres, will be provided for your block between December 2022 and April 2023. You will receive an individual letter in your mailbox, to inform you of its arrival.

Depending on the distribution phases in all the Brussels Region zones, two situations are possible:

  • Your block already has a large container for sorting food waste.
You can then place your orange bags, securely tied, in this large container: this will be emptied once a week by a collector already selected by your co-ownership body.
  • Your block has large containers for sorting, but does not yet have a large container for sorting food waste.
As long as your block does not offer a large container for sorting food waste, you will have to put out your orange bag once a week, on collection day, and place the bag on the pavement in front of your building.

All apartment blocks with a waste bins room should receive their large container for food waste before 15 May 2023, when this sorting becomes compulsory. Don’t hesitate to find out more from your concierge or your property manager.
