Sorting our food waste, and ensuring it is reused as green energy or fertiliser, makes good sense. This will also be compulsory for all Brussels households from 15 May 2023. Don’t wait for this deadline, let’s get sorting now! You can find here all the information you need, plus good advice on sorting food waste in the Brussels Region. The planet thanks you for all your efforts to save it!

Sorting of food waste is compulsory

Our food waste (leftovers, peelings, etc.) make up over a third of our household waste. When thrown away in the white bag for unsorted waste, it ends up in the incinerator, which is a huge waste of resources and produces significant greenhouse gas emissions.

We urgently need to adopt new solutions!

To save resources and reduce our impact on the environment, the sorting of food waste will become compulsory in Europe, at the latest by 31/12/2023.

Brussels-Capital Region did not want to wait until this deadline. Starting in May 2023, food waste will have to be sorted, and this will apply to households as well as companies and administrations.

Who must sort?

Everyone. Each individual’s contribution is essential to make this new approach effective!

Households (families, residents) in the Brussels Region will be required to sort their food waste from 15 May 2023. All Brussels residents will have to do so from this date, either by placing food waste in the orange bag, or by putting it in individual compost or taking it to a neighbourhood compost bin.

Companies and administrations must sort their food waste from 1 May 2023, and have it collected by an authorised collector. For more information on what companies are required to do, visit this page on the website of Brussels Environment: https://environnement.brussels

Even schools have to sort food waste! Very often, when it comes to doing the right thing for the environment, our children set a good example!
